Hospitals and health systems, by and large, are going into 2025 on better footing than they were a year ago, as financial and operating performances stabilized. Key indicators like operating margins, outpatient revenue and average length of stay improved from 2023 and have held steady in the back half of the year, according to advisory firm Kaufman Hall. For many providers, volumes have rebounded to above pre-pandemic levels. This is particularly true for health systems in high growth markets, though many systems in stagnant service areas are also experiencing volume gains, according to a Fitch Ratings report issued in early December.
