Enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans has grown rapidly in recent years, partly because most Medicare Advantage plans charge no premium (other than the Part B premium) and offer extra benefits not available in traditional Medicare such as dental, vision, and hearing benefits. Most people with Medicare also have other coverage, such as Medicaid, Medigap, and employer coverage, which may pay some or all of their Medicare cost-sharing requirements and may also provide benefits that Medicare does not cover. This brief analyzes the different types of coverage that people with Medicare have and the demographic characteristics of Medicare beneficiaries with different types of coverage.
