AmSurg, the ambulatory surgery company once part of Envision Healthcare, is in advanced talks to sell itself to Ascension Health for about $3.9 billion, according to people with knowledge of the matter. A purchase by Ascension could be struck within weeks, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential information. A final agreement hasn’t been reached and terms could change or talks could falter, they added. AmSurg operates upwards of 250 outpatient surgery centers across the US, according to its website. The deal would give Ascension, one of the biggest nonprofit health systems in the US, added scale amid a broader shift in which care is moving toward lower-cost settings outside of traditional hospitals.
