Much of the consternation from the public and federal regulators around consolidation has centered solely around the vertical and horizontal integration of providers and health systems, rather than on consolidation of other health care market actors. This sole focus on provider consolidation is problematic for several reasons, not least because even the largest providers have far less market share than other players in the health care market, most notably insurers.
