Staffing firms Aya Healthcare and Fastaff Travel Nursing reported surges in demand for temporary healthcare staff over the past week, according to a Jefferies report based on an analysis of job postings and data on the firms’ websites. Aya showed a 17% increase in jobs available from March 9 to Monday, March 16, from 11,500 open positions to 13,400. Fastaff listed 257 jobs available as of Monday — up 66% from the prior week and the highest level tracked over the last 12 months. The surge comes as hospitals prepare for an influx of patients with COVID-19, potentially squeezing an already tight labor supply. Frontline healthcare workers who come in contact with infected patients and become ill or quarantined could take away more desperately needed nurses and physicians.
