Executives Are Optimistic about UMass Memorial Health Care Acquisition of Harrington Hospital, but Coronavirus Has Caused Hiccup in Timeline

As health care systems face financial struggles amid the coronavirus pandemic, the timeline for a pending deal for UMass Memorial Health Care to acquire Harrington Hospital has slowed down. In January, UMass Memorial announced its plans to acquire Southbridge-based Harrington Hospital. Final approval on the acquisition was expected to take six to nine months following a period of due diligence. For now, the deal is moving forward, but more slowly, said UMass Memorial Health Care CEO Dr. Eric Dickson. “We are continuing forward with the assumption that we’ll find a way to make that work,” said Dickson, who told MassLive on Tuesday that financial losses during the pandemic will likely lead to the worst year in the history of the health care system. The acquisition remains in the due diligence period. Dickson said the board of either institution could decide the deal is too risky to move forward. But both executives say they feel confident about the ability to move forward successfully.
