The healthcare sector has overtaken retail as the largest industry by employment in the United States, according to a report published this month by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Jobs and wages in healthcare rose almost twice as fast as those in other industries between 1980 and 2022, according to the data. Healthcare jobs increased by 144.5%, compared with a rate of 64.6% for the overall US labor force. The largest wage increases happened among nurses and other midlevel employees.
