Food is medicine’ (FIM) is a healthcare approach built on the knowledge that a patient’s diet and the food they eat play important roles in disease management and prevention. The initiative aims to reduce chronic disease in the U.S. by funding diet-related research, investing in medically tailored meal programs, improving access to nutrition resources, and addressing food insecurity in communities. While the concept has been around for several years, serious momentum behind FIM began to grow after Congress called upon the Department of Health and Human Services in 2023 to develop and implement a strategy to reduce chronic diseases by 2030.
