A comprehensive new review of the effects of private equity investment in nursing homes reveals worsening performance — operational or financial — isn’t always as clear-cut an outcome as it seems. While nurse staffing changes typically have followed private equity ownership, for instance, those trends also tend to mirror changes happening across the broader skilled nursing industry, finds a study published online in Health Policy. The authors included a dozen major studies published between 2000 and 2024 and reviewed quality outcomes, financial performance, process changes and staffing differences. They noted an increase in nursing homes owned by PE firms from 1 % in 2005 to about 13 % in 2021, though federal regulators had put that figure at 5% in 2022.
