Skilled nursing operating margins have recovered from the pandemic, with the 2024 US average reported profit now triple what it was in 2019, according to a major annual trends report. The 40th annual SNF Cost Comparison and Industry Trends Report from CLA shows a median operating operating margin of 1.8% in 2024 — which is up from 0.6% five years ago. While operating margins appeared strong even after COVID began in 2020, most providers operated in the negative through 2023 when emergency government funding was removed from calculations. Margin improvements were accompanied by significant occupancy gains.
