American Medical Association data indicate that only about 42 percent of United States physicians (all specialties) worked in independent physician-owned practices in 2024, an 18-point drop from 2012. Among the 14,136 United States neurologists who were AAN members in 2024, 9 percent worked in a solo practice and 20 percent in a neurology group, according to AAN data. That was down from 12 percent and 23 percent, respectively, from 2019, when there were 13,788 members. A November 2025 analysis from health care advisory firm Cascade Partners called neurology the next logical extension of private equity’s relentless acquisition push through specialty medicine.
