Although many hospitals were able to make some headway on major pain points like contract labor spend, other inflationary pressures and a persistent shortage of clinical workers ensured that many systems’ operating expenses maintained their upward climb, per industry watchers like Kaufman Hall or Fitch Ratings. Though Kaufman Hall noted that operating numbers are generally stronger among the larger, better-resourced health systems, a look at the nation’s 10 largest nonprofit health systems’ financial statements still outlines that trend of revenue growth and mixed performances.
