Why a Private Sale Could Be a Better Route for VillageMD

Finding a buyer for VillageMD won’t be easy for Walgreens in a challenging operating environment, even as the retail pharmacy chain transitions to new ownership. VillageMD, a primary and multispecialty care provider owned by Walgreens, has been up for sale since last summer, but no buyers have stepped up to take over the struggling operation. In fiscal 2024, Walgreens reported VillageMD had $13.9 billion in operating losses. At the same time, the once-exciting trend of retailers moving into healthcare services has largely faded. Many of VillageMD’s financial issues are similar to other providers involved in low-margin, value-based care arrangements.
