Rates of anxiety, serious mental illness (SMI), major depressive episodes and suicidality went down slightly among adolescents across the U.S. in 2024. Yet, among adults, the prevalence of any mental illness rose by 4.8%, from 58.7 million people in 2023 to 61.5 million people in 2024. Despite these trends, there were 3 million fewer adults and 300,000 fewer adolescents who received any mental health treatment in 2024 compared to 2023, according to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health compiled by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
