New Bill Would Exempt Healthcare from $100K H-1B Fee

Doctors and other healthcare workers would be exempt from the $100,000 fee for H-1B visas under bipartisan legislation introduced this week. “The $100,000 H-1B filing fee adds insult to injury to hospitals, especially in rural areas,” US Rep. Sanford Bishop Jr., D-Georgia, said in a press release. “The fee will have a detrimental impact on their ability to recruit qualified healthcare professionals to some of the nation’s most underserved areas.” H-1B visas are often thought of in terms of recruiting skilled technology workers to the US. However, healthcare organizations, including staffing firms, use the visa to recruit needed professionals for hospitals. The new $100,000 fee makes such visas a no-go for healthcare, one expert said.
