The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Thursday issued its proposed payment rule for hospices in 2027 containing a 2.4% payment increase. If finalized, this would result in a $785 million payment boost from Fiscal Year 2026. The proposed pay raise results from a 3.2% inpatient hospital market basket increase, which is then reduced by 0.8% due to productivity adjustment required by law. The proposed hospice cap amount for FY 2027 is $36,210.11, up from $35,361.44 for 2026. Other provisions in the proposed rule include an analysis of Medicare non-hospice spending under a hospice election, including details regarding a hospice service and spending variation index (SSVI).
