The U.S. could face a steep decline in its adult psychiatry workforce over the next decade, with workforce adequacy projected to fall to 42.8% by 2037 as psychiatrist supply shrinks and demand rises, according to a study published in Psychiatry Online. The supply of psychiatrists serving adults is projected to decrease 12.3%, from 37,260 full-time equivalent physicians in 2024 to 32,660 in 2037. During the same period, demand is projected to increase 43.7% under the status quo scenario and 47.4% under an improved access scenario.
