Virtual Care Use Climbs, but Many Health Systems Lose Money on Digital Services

Virtual care continues to be a bigger and bigger part of care delivery at U.S. hospitals and health systems, even as many organizations struggle with narrow margins, rising costs and unreimbursed digital health services. That’s according to data from Strata Decision Technology, whose most recent Performance Trends report found that telehealth encounters rose 79% between January 2019 and January 2026, while remote patient monitoring encounters increased nearly 4,000% during the same period. The findings suggest that virtual care has moved beyond its pandemic-era role and is now a more established part of healthcare operations.
