Bonati Spine Institute Files for Bankruptcy After Dispute with the State

Alfred Bonati, the founder, chief surgeon and face of the the Bonati Spine Institute, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with debts of more than $10 million, court records show. Chapter 11 proceedings have also been initiated for Gulf Coast Orthopedic Center, the institute’s business arm, and All American Holdings, another affiliate. Combined, the two firms reported liabilities of at least $101 million. The financial malaise comes two years after its surgical center was temporarily shut down by state regulators who said a “certified surgical technologist” had performed multiple surgeries even though he was not licensed as a doctor.
