Can Hospital at Home Finally Hit Its Tipping Point? Lessons from the Hospitalist Field

The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed important regulatory changes and supply-chain investments that have markedly eased previous financial and logistical barriers to Hospital at Home (HaH). Hundreds of health systems sought and implemented the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS’s) HaH waiver and invested in the ecosystem necessary to provide high-quality care at home. Four years after the onset of the pandemic, however, headwinds for HaH adoption remain. For HaH to achieve its full potential, advocates may find lessons in the decisions, missteps, and successes of hospitalists in their early days.
