IRF utilization among Medicare beneficiaries has increased dramatically over the last few years, especially from 2022 to 2023. From 2022 to 2023 (one calendar year), IRF stays per Medicare beneficiary increased by approximately 12%. From 2021 to 2023, the total incremental IRF discharges are estimated at about 200,000 discharges, which equates to an incremental 7,000 average daily census (ADC) nationally. At a 70% implied occupancy rate, this equates to about 10,000 more utilized or developed beds in only three years.
