The percentage of physicians in private practice has continued to decline, according to the American Medical Association’s (AMA) biennial Physician Practice Benchmark Surveyopens in a new tab or window. In 2024, 42.2% of physicians worked in private practices; this percentage is downopens in a new tab or window from 46.7% in 2022, and from 60.1% in 2012, when the survey was first conducted. Ophthalmology was the specialty with the largest share (70.4%) of physicians in private practice in 2024, followed by orthopedic surgery (54%), and other surgical subspecialties with a combined share of 51.2%.
