Telemedicine Has Not Increased Medical Care Use, Costs, Major Study Finds

The use of telemedicine has not significantly driven up patient visits and medical spending across all payer types, according to a May study published in JAMA Network Open. “Nationwide telemedicine adoption was not significantly associated with changes in visits or spending, either overall or when stratified by urbanicity, payer type, or area-level social vulnerability, easing concerns about large spending increases from telemedicine expansion,” authors said. “As policymakers weigh whether to extend Medicare telemedicine flexibilities beyond their 2027 expiration, our findings suggest limited near-term spending risk, although continued evaluation of longer-term effects on costs, health outcomes, and quality of care remains essential.”
