Physicians in independent practice often feel a sense of freedom to guide patient care and a sense of pride in operating a business. But success now does not translate to success always. Physicians need to consider the best ways to maintain their independence. If the time has come to join forces with other physicians, investors, a hospital or health system, they also need an idea about what a medical practice may be worth. Andy Colbert is senior managing director of Ziegler, a privately held investment bank that started in 1902 and that has focused on health care for decades. Colbert spoke with Medical Economics about current trends around the ownership mindset needed to spur real growth in a medical practice and valuation.
