Opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnosis among Medicaid beneficiaries is on the decline, while medication for the condition is on the rise in recent years. A cross-sectional study published in JAMA evaluated the trends in OUD treatment from 2018 to 2023. Researchers found the percentage of Medicaid beneficiaries diagnosed with an OUD declined from 4.2% to 3.6%. The percentage of beneficiaries receiving medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) rose from 60% to 69% over the five-year period, with nearly every state seeing an increase in medication use. Researchers noted that this could be related to public health initiatives around OUD.
